St Catherine’s Tranmere: Apprentice

About St Catherine’s

St Catherine’s Tranmere is an Evangelical Anglican Church in Birkenhead, Wirral. It is not far from the entrance to the Mersey tunnel into Liverpool with good links into Liverpool and Chester. The area is designated a UPA. We are part of the North West Partnership.

We are still relatively small Church. Over the past year or so we have been experiencing a growth of about two new people every month, some of who have recently made commitments. Almost all of these have been from unchurched backgrounds. The Minister has been here for nearly two year and new gospel initiatives are constantly springing up in all age groups.

As an Evangelical Church we are convinced about the urgency of evangelism and we believe that people will come to know the Lord Jesus and mature in that relationship through accurate and clear Bible teaching. We also have a close partnership with other Evangelicals in this area with similar convictions facing similar issues.

Because of it’s UPA situation St Catherine’s isn’t a typical Apprenticeship. Nonetheless we can offer a wide variety of ministry experience and training in a slightly different environment.

The Team

The team consists of the Minister, a Children’s worker and a male apprentice. We are looking for another apprentice (male or female). There are an increasing number of volunteers.

Training

One day a week on the North West Training Course (NWTC)

Supervision

At least once a fortnight with the Minister (or Children’s worker for female apprentices). This will be to ascertain how the training course is going, to evaluate work done in the Church and to raise any issues and concerns either party may have.

This is also a time to oversee the apprentices’ Christian maturity and make sure they are still spiritually healthy.

Conferences

It is expected that apprentices will go on a 9:38 conference and to the NW Evangelical Leaders Assembly (ELA).

There may be other appropriate conferences to go on to be decided with the Minister.

Finances and accommodation

St Catherine’s will pay for rent, NWTC course fees, conferences, ministry expenses and a subsistence grant. There will also probably be a small book grant.

Tasks

Sunday Club

Prepare and lead sessions regularly and help with discipline

Youth Group

Assist leaders sometimes lead sessions

Just Look Courses

Couples bringing Children to be Baptised at St Catherine’s have to do a 6 week Evangelistic course where someone from Church comes to their house. Apprentices will observe one of these (probably done by the Minister) and then will be expected to be able to do this themselves.

Starting up

There are a number of new initiatives we hope to start in the next year or so. We hope apprentices will be active in these.

Events

Apprentices are expected to organise at least one ‘event’

Chores

1-2 hours cleaning per week. Occasional printing and copying to be done.

May have occasional preaching opportunities

General

It is expected that a Trainee will be loyal part of the St Catherine’s family. This will often mean just mucking in with the rest of us (e.g. unglamorous jobs like posting flyers) and providing others with a warm welcome.

Apprentices are in position where people take notice of them and so we insist on both humility in attitude and holiness in life.
