Ministry Trainee Scheme
Who is this designed for?
Christians who are seeking to be trained for Christian ministry, and especially in teaching the Bible (whatever form that might take). Preference will be given to those who have a commitment to a lifetime of Christian service, whether that means in a paid capacity or as an active member of any congregation.
There should be a keenness to serve in whatever ways required by the on-going ministry of Christ Church, both in taking certain responsibilities and in fulfilling various tasks around the church.
The scheme works in 3 parts
Service
Ministry Trainees assist the church with a variety of administrative tasks e.g. room set-up, office work, administrative support for staff, crèche and audio visual support . On average this will occupy no more than 12 hours per week
Training
One day a week will be dedicated to formal training in Biblical ministry, through the Yorkshire Training scheme or equivalent. Areas that will be covered will include:
Biblical theology
Understanding the Bible’s big picture, and the relationship of the OT to NT
Systematic theology
Synthesizing the Bible’s overall message about particular topics
Bible Exposition
Introduction to the principles of Bible interpretation and application with worked examples taken from particular Bible books.
Practical Gospel Ministry
Thinking through the practical implications of gospel ministry in different areas of life, for example, for children and young people, students, workers, the elderly.
Teaching workshops
Hands on opportunities to teach the Bible with encouragement and feed back. Each Ministry Trainee is supported by one member of staff with whom they have regular meetings.
Trainees are also expected to attend the 9.38 Apprentices Conference, and one other conference. The fees for these conferences will be paid for by the church. Each Ministry Trainee will have the opportunity study the Bible on a regular basis with an older Christian in the congregation.
Study projects
There are 5 designated study projects during the year. Each project involves reading and researching, thinking and formulating ideas making them applicable to your own discipleship as well as your related ministry. There will be an opportunity to review, reflect and pray in response to what has been learned
Practical Experience
The rest of Ministry Trainees’ time will be spent in Bible teaching and the regular evangelistic work of the Church. Each Ministry Trainee will be attached to a specific ministry department as appropriate. However there is some flexibility in the scheme, and there will be scope for everyone to be involved in some other areas of ministry as well. Areas of ministry include: children’s, youth, schools, students, graduates and other members of the church family (this may include experience of visiting the sick and bereaved and supporting and reaching out to the elderly) When you apply, please indicate your area(s) of experience and interest.
Funding
The scheme is a 1 to 2 year training programme (running from September to August) aimed at equipping men and women for gospel ministry. The church provides a training bursary of £5500 and covers all work related expenses including 2 conferences. As the bursary will not cover all living expenses for a whole year, each trainee will be expected to raise any shortfall from home churches, prayer supporters and other means.
Time off and holidays
Saturdays plus one half day off midweek
Holidays are usually fixed to approximately 2 weeks at Christmas (including 9:38 conference), 2 weeks at Easter, bank holidays and two to three weeks in August.
Applications
Please send a CV (to include Christian testimony, current ministry experience and 2 referees) to Andrew Rees, Associate Vicar at Christ Church Fulwood, Canterbury Avenue, Sheffield, S10 3RT by 14th December 2007. Interviews will be held on 20th January 2008.
